What is Shock Therapy?
Shock Therapy is the first, Electric Muscle Stimulation (EMS)-based group fitness studio in the U.S. Shock Therapy classes are unique, intense and efficient to provide maximum results with only 30 minutes of exercise. Our small group sessions allow you to feel a part of a team and guarantee optimal results and safety.
What is EMS?
Electric Muscle Stimulation (EMS) provides electrical impulses that enhance your body’s voluntary muscle contractions. EMS is a time-honored fitness technique popular in gyms throughout Europe and common to advanced sports rehabilitation.
Why is Shock Therapy’s training more effective than conventional fitness training?
Shock Therapy’s full-body EMS workout activates 90% of the body’s muscles simultaneously. Shock Therapy condenses three hours of conventional fitness training into 30-minute workouts.
Is EMS safe?
Yes! Low-frequency electrical impulse is widely used in training and rehabilitation therapy. Muscles are electrochemical organs and receive electrical impulses from the central nervous system to contract. EMS technology adheres to this natural principle, simply intensifying the contraction by applying electrodes directly above the muscle.
IMPORTANT: Please note that EMS equipment should not be used on people with heart disease, cancer history, pacemakers or other electronic medical devices, Rhabdomyolysis, or during pregnancy. EMS is also not recommended for people with a predisposition to epileptic seizures or convulsions, infectious diseases, prone to hemorrhaging or heavy bleeding (hemophilia), an abdominal wall or inguinal hernia, arteriosclerosis, high fever, blood pressure related illnesses, skin disease, or people with metal body implants.
Are there any long-term side effects of EMS training?
No. There are no known side effects of EMS training.
Can the electric current harm my heart?
No. The low-frequency impulses exclusively activate the striated skeletal muscles. The heart, other organs and muscle tissues surrounding the organs are not reached.
Who is EMS suitable for?
EMS is a great way to tone and get in shape for everyone age 18 and up and in good general health. If you have any specific ailments, we advise you to speak to your healthcare provider or one of our friendly Shock Therapy team members before booking.

Does EMS hurt?
No. You’ll experience a similar challenge to lifting weights or performing squats. However, days after working out, you will feel sore as if you trained for several hours at the gym.
Why do I need to arrive at least 15 minutes early to class?
For proper power suit setup and electric impulse adjustments, you must arrive at least 15 minutes before class begins. For the safety of participants, Shock Therapy offers no grace period for late arrivals. Anyone arriving less than 15 minutes prior to the start of class will be considered a “cancellation.” (For new Shock Therapy clients, we grant a one-time courtesy reschedule for late arrivals.) What do I need to train?
Clients must bring a pair of sneakers and wear our signature Shock Therapy undergarments designed for EMS whole-body workouts. You can rent or buy a set of undergarments at our front desk. It is mandatory to wear our organic viscose-elastane blend undergarments because they have the capacity to absorb water necessary to transmit electrical impulses from the EMS power suit’s electrodes. Meanwhile, the material prevents electrical currents from spreading.
What does class set-up involve?
You’ll come to class sporting your Shock Therapy undergarments and sneakers. A Shock Therapy trainer will wet your undergarments for proper transmission of electrical impulses, then strap you into a power suit that fits like a second skin. The Shock Therapy trainer will ask you to stand in a gentle squat position while he individually adjusts your electrical impulse strength, gradually increasing. How often can I workout?
We recommend two, 30-minute sessions per week (separated by 72 hours or at least 48 hours). To achieve optimal results, you can do up to three, 30-minute Shock Therapy sessions per week (two Strength Classes separated by 72 hours, and one Metabolism Class is recommended). Please keep in mind that two Shock Therapy Strength classes is the equivalent of six hours of weight lifting. Please check out our Class Descriptions & Pricing for more information.
Can I train with EMS every day?
No. Because 90% of your muscle fibers are activated during a Shock Therapy workout, your body requires at least 48 hours to recuperate. We recommend you wait 72 hours between Strength classes.
How long do I need to work out before I see results?
All bodies are different. In most cases, you will see great results after 10 consistent sessions. We advise that you follow a nutrition plan for optimal results.
